to evening watering as this allows an opportunity for the leaves to dry completely. Wet leaves at night encourage disease buildup.
• Sidedress crops like com and cabbage with 2 pounds of 5-10-5 per 50 feet of row about a month after growth starts. Scatter the fertilizer between the rows and scratch into the soil with a rake. If your garden is on an infertile sandy soil, sidedress all of your vegetables to promote vigorous growth.
• Stop vine crops from taking over your garden or lawn by pinching off the fuzzy growing tips. This also directs the plant’s energy into ripening fruit rather than producing more vine.
• Divide and transplant bearded iris using the vigorous ends of the rhizomes. Discard the old center portion. Cut the leaves back to about 8 inches long. Do not worry about wounding the roots; wounding actually encourages flowering.
