Zoning progress
The Board of Supervisors has indicated that it plans to adopt the proposed zoning ordinance sometime this summer. The supervisors are, however, proceeding cautiously and should be commended for that.
The adoption of new zoning ordinances, which will guide and influence the county’s growth for years, is a serious matter. Each regulation needs to be thoroughly reviewed, both from a technical and a legal standpoint.
An ordinance which will not stand a court challenge would be worse than the present regulations, which have been found in many cases to be too vague to be useful. Additionally, overly broad or possibly discriminatory regulations will invite and facilitate challenges by parties which may not agree with the supervisors’ intent.
The supervisors are currently reviewing the proposed ordinances with an eye to those problems. They have wisely sought the counsel of professional planners and legal experts.
