“It had a character, a quality, a sense of what the Founding Fathers had in mind. The principles they thought and argued about for several weeks in drafting the Declaration of Independence have trickled down to Washington, Va., 200 years later,” mused William Carrigan.
For the past quarter century, Mr. Carrigan has hosted the town’s celebration and remembrance of the true spirit of Independence Day at Avon Hall, his home in Washington.
Aided by a prominent preview article in “big” Washington’s Post, the first Washington’s traditional festivities drew between 10,000 and 15,000 people, according to several estimates.
