"When I first came on, they just gave you a badge and a gun, and you might get on a firing range once a year. By the time I retired, you had to have 40 hours of formal training (in firearms) a year. And if you didn’t get it, you had to turn in your badge!" Mr. Johnson reported.
When Shenandoah was established, much of the native wildlife had disappeared from the mountains.
“There were very few deer, if any, around here w'hen I was a boy,” Mr. Johnson recalled. “It wasn’t worth your while to hunt until the late 1950s,” after deer were reintroduced to the Blue Ridge by the park service, he said. Bear and beaver were likewise brought back, and the bobcats never left.
