More important, perhaps, are the moral and humanitarian sides of the question.
As pointed out at the hearing, handicapped does not necessarily mean wheelchair-bound, and it does not „ necessarily refer to a permanent condition. Anyone who has ever had a broken leg can testify to the enormous difficulties that temporary condition imposes.
For some time before his recent death, Supervisor Clarence Baldwin had trouble negotiating the stairs to the second floor courtroom for meetings of the board.
This is an issue which ought to be easily resolved. The citizens who feel slighted by their lack of access do not seem to be anxious to instigate a lawsuit. The supervisors, likewise, certainly understand the legitimate rights of all citizens to attend meetmgs at which decisions affecting their lives are made.
The sticky point seems to be money.
As was stated at the hearing, this is not a time to pinch pennies. But, if courthouse renovations prove too expensive, - an alternate, accessible site must be found.
Legalities are not the point.
Last weekend we celebrated, with great fanfare and expressions of patriotism, the unique freedoms which we ALL enjoy. To deny any citizen of Rappahannock County the opportunity to exercise those freedoms would be a bitter irony indeed.
