There’s more to the job, according to Bob Johnson, Shenandoah National Park ranger who recently retired after ,40 years at the post. A ranger must be game warden, firefighter, representative of the Better Business Bureau, deputy sheriff and public health officer, says Mr. Johnson. And he’s an expert. His 40 years, just 10 fewer than the park itself is celebrating in 1986, marks the longest service of a Shenandoah ranger.
His ties to the Blue Ridge Mountains predate the park. “Where I was born is part of the park now. My dad’s homeplace is up there,” Mr. Johnson said.
