A poem about love suggesting that it is a primeval, fundamental force is Marianne Moore’s The Paper Nautilus (1941). With this poem, Ms. Moore (1887-1972), picks out certain features of an obscure mollusk which interest her. The paper nautilus, of the family Argonautidae, is a kind of octopus with eight arms, two of which are modified into “sails” which secrete a pearl-white, parchment-like egg case, shaped like the better known chambered nautilus but open throughout. The shell is narrow and curled at on,e end like a ram’s horn. The exterior is beautifully sculptured in “close-laid Ionic chiton-folds”. The Ionic column is
