The computer converts these signals into data blocks, and projects them on the screen next to the moving blip for the appropriate aircraft. At the same time, the computers automatically print out flight progress strips, containing all the current information, plus projected times that the aircraft will enter other sectors on its route of flight.
While there is an undercurrent of tension watching controllers go about their work, the overwhelming impression is one of quiet competence and economy of words. Washington ARTCC is justifiably proud of the role we play in making the air traffic system of the United States the safest in the world.
