Ms. Saltonstall called on the supervisors to provide the leadership to create public access for the handicapped, and if it isn’t forthcoming, for the county’s churches to assume that role. “With the churches’ backing, I cannot imagine that these barriers won’t come tumbling down, to provide our handicapped people the identical access and opportunity that we, who are so blessed not to be handicapped, already eiyoy — and take so for granted,” she concluded.
Doris Donald, an employee of the Veterans’ Administration for 29 years who worked for eight years with an architect on the VA’s handicapped barrier removal committee, called the required alterations “no big deal.” Handicapped access is necessary to meet the needs of many people in the county, she said.
