As dusk approached, several choral groups entertained the crowd with a selection of patriotic and religious songs. The singing culminated in America the Beautiful as the Statue of Liberty, designed by local artist Laurie Marshall, was revealed in the flickering candles of the traditional luminari.
Ellen Manson, a former resident of Washington (whose husband Charlie appeared as his alter-ego, Uncle Sam), led the crowd in singing The Star-Spangled Banner as the fireworks display began.
