in tne poem she evokes Hercules, the Greek strong man who accomplished the fabled twelve labors, one of which was to kill the manyheaded Hydra, a fabulous water serpent somewhat like the octopus, whose snake-like heads regenerated when cut off. When a large crab attacked Hercules as he was trying to kill the Hydra, he called to his charioteer, Iolaus, who set a field afire and took burning branches to cauterize the stumps of the Hydra’s heads as Hercules cut them off, thus preventing their regeneration.
