The supervisors Monday took action to clear the way for the Bureau of Solid and Hazardous Waste Management to approve an extension of the county’s landfill.
But they stopped short of giving Robert Forman, the area supervisor for solid waste disposal, exactly what he’d asked for.
In second-hand communication from attorneys last month, the board learned that Mr. Forman required two things before he would extend capacity at the existing privately owned and operated landfill near Woodville:
• A resolution stating the board’s intent to provide a new county landfill by July 1,1987.
• Approval for a 10-foot lift to cover trash at the current site.
Earlier this year, Mr. Forman had judged that capacity there would be reached by July 1, 1986, and had ordered a closure plan submitted by property owner Clifton Clark and Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Updike. The Updikes manage Community Trash Disposal Inc., the firm that supplies and empties Rappahannock’s scattered dumpsters.
Under the terms of their contract with the county, all solid waste — once deposited in the dumpsters — becomes the Updikes’ responsibility. That contract would have expired June 1 but the supervisors exercised their option to extend the arrangement for another year.
