Deborah Coombs, mother of a wheelchair bound child, noted that she was forced to lobby the School Board for some time before handicapped access was provided at the county’s public schools. Children’s programs at the library remain inaccessible, Mrs. Coombs said. Fortunately, her son is still young enough and small enough to be carried easily, she added. “Right now, he isn’t very heavy, but a 58 pound wheelchair is!”
Federal regulations requiring the provision of handicapped parking at public buildings went into effect iml984, yet there are still no handicapped parking spaces at the courthouse, she pointed out. “I discussed this with the board in October 1983, and I’m still waiting for something to be done.”
Former Supervisor E. P. Luke recalled that plans for the recent courthouse remodeling had initially included work to remove barriers to the handicapped. “The judges took that out or they agreed with you when you did,” he reminded the supervisors.
