He also worked in life and death situations, leading search and rescue details through the park’s wilderness to the site of airplane crashes.
And he even fit the public perception of ranger as Smokey the Bear, always on the alert for forest fires.
“Fire control occupies a lot of a ranger’s time when it’s dry,” Mr. Johnson noted. “Fortunately for this park, the main visitor season doesn’t come during fire season, except for the few weeks in autumn when the leaves begin to fall.
