But the greatest satisfaction came not from proximity to the movers and shakers. “It was a good feeling — the best feeling —to run across somebody you KNEW had been hunting illegally in the park for quite a while, to finally catch them in the act and nab them,” Ranger Johnson said.
Shenandoah was Bob Johnson’s only assignment during his 40 years in the Park Service. He doesn’t regret missing the glamour tours in the mountains of the American West or the wilds of Alaska.
“There was a day when if you hadn’t been to Yellowstone, you just hadn’t been. But things have changed. A ranger has lots of opportunities at Shenandoah National Park,” he said.
“And it’s a good place to raise a family,” interjected Mrs. Johnson. “That’s one of the reasons why we stayed in Shenandoah.”
“Yes; this is a pretty good park assignment for folks,” the ranger continued. “You don’t have to punch a time clock. You’re out-of-doors a lot. For a long time, policies and procedures were pretty broad. You could structure your own time, just as long as you got the job done ... In my entire 40 years, there never was a day when I hated to go to work,” Mr. Johnson concluded.
