Because the park is a sanctuary for wildlife, no hunting is allowed on the property. Therefore, wild game thrives in the park and Shenandoah often has been called a bear nursery because of the increasing black bear population.
The black-bear notion causes a lot of excitement among park campers and Gov. Baliles praised the park’s rangers for their courtesy — and patience — in answering the single most popular question: “How many bears are in this park?”
Sen. Byrd cited the ruggedness and scenery of the park as its greatest attractions. With an increasing population, “it’s important that we have a park system where people can get out of these congested areas,” he said.

56 tablespoons dry mustard
