These suggest the possibility of treachery on the one hand, and becoming a victim of vanity and physical weakness on the other. At the end, she introduces the idea of a fortress, a bastion constructed to protect its occupants. The paper nautilus, she says, proves that a “thin glass shell” and vigilance make a safer home.
This poem is written in the syllabic pattern of verses Ms. Moore invented, here seven, seven, five, five, eight, six, six. TTiis is quite different from the usual method of establishing a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, called feet in prosody.
