Unlike the park’s dedication on July 3, 1936, there were no units of marching soldiers, no stirring speech from the president of the United States and no lavish tent parties at the 1986 event.
Rather, about 350 people — more than 2,000 were expected — quietly paid homage to the 195,000acre park and the Virginians who gave up their homes, land and time for it.
