She complimented Mr. Updike on his work as Hampton’s representative, but maintained that the district would be better served by a parent whose children attend pubic schools. (Mr. Updike’s two children are students at Wakefield, a private school near Huntly.) Sharing the experiences children bring home from the classroom gives a School Board member “first hand involvement” and "more of a stake and personal interest in what’s going on,” she said.

Mrs. Harris, whose two daughters attend Rappahannock County Elementary School, noted that she has 14 years experience in public and private schools, both as a teacher and an administrator.
