Twice the crafters
There will be crafters of all descriptions, "about twice as many as last year,” Chief Roach said. “The list is unbelievable,” he said, naming furniture-makers, silversmiths, jewelers, potters, weavers, antique dealers, woodworkers, clothiers and stained-glass makers as just a few of the artisans who are coming. So many requests have been received, he added, that the booths will extend along Gay St. from Middle St. to the dead end south of the Washington Baptist Church.
And the churches in town will be participating as well. The Washington Baptist Church will have a bake sale as well as other food for sale.
Trinity Episcopal Church carries on another tradition, with celebrities, including columnist James J. Kilpatrick and Senator Eugene McCarthy, serving up “Heavenly Dips” of ice cream to cool the heated festival-goers. “Holy Chow” will also be available from other members of the congregation, and the “Resurrection Section” offers white elephant seekers the opportunity to indulge their weakness.
