The supervisors kept the engine running while they fine tuned the proposed 1987-88 budget Monday morning, reviewing expenditures one final time and setting the new tax rates all in 10 minutes.
Accountant Wally Cox reported minor changes in appropriations for the registrar and electoral board and for the commonwealth’s attorney, reflecting action of the State Compensation Board which sets and pays salaries for constitutional and law enforcement officers. "There’s no approval yet from the Compensation Board for the sheriffs department’s budget,” Mr. Cox said, but he noted that any adjustments to office expenses - the only portion for which the county pays a share - would have little impact.
"I want the welfare personnel to stay the same as this year,” said Newbill Miller, asking that an unfilled case worker’s position be eliminated. "This is no reflection on Mrs. Kreitler (director of the Social Services Department). She’s doing a good job. But they'll have to do what they can with the staff they have.”
"There are a lot of people in my district who will go along with that,” agreed Nelson Lane.
The deletion of the $16,000 a year position, approved unanimously by the four supervisors at Monday’s special meeting, reduces the county’s share of the 1967-88 budget by about $3,200,
