“Right now, I think most of our trouble comes from a lack of awareness, a lack of coordinated policy,” Mr. Croft said. It would require a cooperative effort of industry, formers, scientists, and government on various fronts. These include regulation of the sale and use of pesticides, education of formers, and the funding of resistance management programs.
Case histories of pesticide resistance management in the United States (spider mite, pear and apple pests), Australia (cotton bollworm and cattle tick), Denmark (houseflies), and Taiwan (diamondback moth) have shown that success can be very site specific.
It can vary greatly from area to area, Mr. Croft explained, due to differences in biological, management, cultural, and policy-related factors. Clearly, these stumbling blocks must be overcome if the effectiveness of remaining and future pesticides is not to be squandered through overuse.
