Photo courtesy of Linda Welk Betsy, age 3, and Wesley Welk, age 6, have collected more than 1,000 gypsy moth caterpillars from six oak trees in their yard in Flint Hill. After seeing a specimen of the caterpillar at the Extension Office, the children identified the source of the black pellets which were bombarding their house, yard and car. They affixed burlap bands, provided by the Extension Office, to the oak trees. The caterpillars hide under the bands during the day, making them easy picking. Mrs. Welk said, “It has been an interesting nature experience. I hate to teach the children to kill anything, but it has to be done to save the trees for now " and the future. ”
