Bank head indicted

ROANOKE — A federal grand jury on Friday returned a three-count indictment accusing the former head of a Coeburn bank of filing false transaction reports and embezzlement.

Hie indictment said about $1.9 million in transactions were made from July 1983 to August 1984, when Eary 0. Adkins was either president or chief executive officer of Miners Exchange Bank.

No telephone listing was avaible for Mr. Adkins in Coeburn.

The bank’s current president and chief executive officer, Charles Ward, said Mr. Adkins was fired in August 1984. Mr. Ward said he was aware that officials had been investigating past occurrences at the bank, but he had no information about the nature of the probe.

The six-page indictment returned Friday said the $1.9 million in checks made payable to various companies were falsely endorsed and not properly reported to the Treasury Department.

Hie indictment also accuses Mr. Adkins of embezzlement by taking $8,900 from two bank accounts to pay employee bonuses, but only paying out $5,300 in bonuses.

C&P adds jobs

NORTON — The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Virginia said Saturday it will open a new directory assistance office in Norton, creating 150 new jobs for the Wise County community.

C&P Vice President Hugh Stallard said the decision to locate the office in Norton stemmed from a meeting several months ago between company officials and Gov Gerald L. Baliles.

“At that meeting, the governor personally asked us to consider southwest Virginia as an area to locate some of our operations,” Mr. Stallard said.
