churches suffered the same fate as Oakley Baptist.
Oakley Baptist Church has had a number of pastors through the years, though some of the names are missing from the church’s records.
Rev. McFadden was pastor in the early 1900s, and Rev. P. H. Chelf ministered to the congregation in the late 1920s and through into the early 40s. Rev. A. Paul Thompson succeeded him in 1946 and remained with the church until 1957. (Rev. Thompson is planning to write a history of Oakley after he retires as Director of Guidance at Fork Union Military Academy.)
Rev. Thompson was succeeded by Joseph Graver, who remained pastor of Oakley until 1958. During 1959 and 1960, there is no record of a pastor at the church. From 1962 until the present the church is not listed in the minutes of the Shiloh Association at all.
The records do contain, however, a cancelled check dated Oct. 18,1965 to a Rev. Titchenell which indicates that he might have held services from 1961 to 1965.
Rev. Ernest R. Cornwell, pastor of Woodville Baptist Church, will hold a last service in tribute to the old church and the departed members of its dedicated congregation. It will be held this Sunday, June 28, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
