In 1848 the first patent for an ice cream freezer was issued. Before then, ice cream was made by filling a metal container with the cream mixture and placing it inside a wooden tub, which was then filled with ice
and shaken until the cream froze. It didn’t take long for someone to realize there must be a better way. Salt was added to the ice to speed the freezing and cut down on the shaking.
Things began to happen over the next few years.
In 1851 Jacob Fussell opened the first ice cream factory in Baltimore, Md. The ice cream parlors began to open in every dty and small town. Ice cream sundaes were introduced to American before the turn of the century when several communities banned the sale of sodas on Sunday. In 1904 the first ice cream cone was served at the World’s Fair in St. Louis.

“Sherlock Holmes and the Curse of the Sign of the Four” will be at Wayside Theater in Middletown through July 4.
A beautiful woman, a missing treasure and a very strange footprint figure into the tale of suspense as Holmes and Watson attempt to unravel a three-year-old disappearance of a retired soldier.
The play is based on one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s short stories.
The play runs Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. with a matinee July 1 at 3 p.m.
