The first and most critical move is for the attorney to become involved in and act as a watchdog over the state’s landfill permitting process, said Beverly Hunter. There are many ways to slow down the process, “technically and bureaucratically,” Mrs. Hunter noted, recalling the advice of Leonard Miller, a Washington attorney who specializes in environmental cases. “We can slow it down to the point where we can scrutinise what’s going on.”
Mrs. Semones reported that she spoke personally with each member of the Board of Supervisors. "The supervisors assured me that this would be the best run dump in the state of Virginia. They assured me that frhia dump would take trash only from Rappahannock County. They assured me that the gates to the dump would be opened in the morning and locked back up at night by a man who would be on the job every day. They assured me that the trash would be compacted, mashed and covered with eight inches of dirt every day. They assured me that I would never even know the Hump {g there!” But as one of the landowners within a mile radius of Stover tract, Mrs. Semones added that she wanted the protection of an attorney if she’s forced to live with the landfill.
“Hiring an attorney will mean, at the minimum, that we’re going to have a safer landfill IF it goes in there,” agreed a voice from the back of the fire hall.
“Now, when we need more money (should litigation be pursued), what’s going to happenT” Mrs. Sememes asked.
“Show us a positive direction and we may come up with more money,” was the answer.
That positive direction was evident to at least one Amissville resident. Earlier, Mrs. Semones had reported donations of $12,166. Then as the meeting dispersed, she announced, “I’ve just been handed a check for $1,000!”
