While ice cream is generally considered as American as apple pie, Marco Polo is reported to have the Chinese eat fruit-flavored frozen ices as he traveled through the Orient during the 14th century. Italians were the first Europeans to develop ices for desserts.
During the 16th century, French chefe were introduced to these ices. The chefs experimented with adding heavy cream and eggs to the basic ices resulting in the beginnings of ice cream as we have come to know it today. Ice cream came to Britain when a French chef was imported to the court.
Thomas Jefferson introduced this new delicacy to the colonists by bringing recipes from France. It has been said that George Washington’s ledgers listed the purchase of a “cream machine” in 1784. A large mound of strawberry ice cream was served by Dolly Madison at her husband’s second inauguration in 1812. This tasty dish brought raves from those in attendance.
Despite the widespread acceptance of ice cream, it wasn’t until 1846 when a woman named Nancy Johnson added the key components to the freezer: the dasher and the hand crank. With the addition of the dasher, it was possible to have creamier ice cream, while the crank speeding the freezing process.
