When Melly Reuling starts up Mount Everest late this summer, folks in Rappahannock will have good reason to cheer her on in her bid to be the first American woman to the top. Miss Reuling, a 26-year-old resident of Clarke County, is the sister of Ginger Miller of Washington, Va.
She will join four other women and nine men in the assault on the mountain’s north face in Tibet. The south face has been climbed more frequently, primarily because Nepal has afforded easier access to Everest. But in the early 1960s, the Chinese government began allowing climbers to approach the mountain through Tibet.
Miss Reuling’s expedition comes under the auspices of the Seattle-based Mountain Madness. Although she has never before attempted Everest, she has extensive climbing experience. As a guide for Mountain Madness, she leads climbing groups out of Seattle and Tanzania, in East Africa, the site of Mount
