The Perseids last for several days. While the show is visible on clear nights during the second week in August, “typically the meteors are better to watch after midnight,” Prof. Leap said.
Like all meteor showers, the Perseids are associated with a particular comet. Theirs is called Swift Tuttle, according to Prof. Leap.
With Mother Nature to provide clear skies, a pair of binoculars or, better still, a small telescope, the August skies can unfold for the casual observer.
In the southern sky, the planet Saturn and its rings are visible with a small telescope, Dr. Leap said. The planet is located in the constellation Scorpius and is near Antares, the giant red star. The color of that star indicates its cooler temperature. The hottest stars in the sky have a blue tint.
