Forest fire

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has issued a warning to outdoorsmen to be extremely careful of the danger of fires in the woods.
Lew Southard, a spokesman for the Virginia Division of Forestry, said that five regions of the state report mild drought copditions while the sixth is reporting conditions in the moderate range. He said that a number of small fires, most less than 10 acres, have been reported.
The main cause of these forest fires has been lightning strikes. Last week, a lightning-caused fire in the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area in Madison County kept Forest Service and Game Department crews busy for several days. Although the blaze burned less than 10 acres, crews were on the scene 24 hours a day for five days to ensure that the fire did not leap the firebreaks.
These lightning-caused fires create particular problems for firefighters because they usually strike high on wooded ridges which are difficult to reach, especially with mechanized fire-fighting equipment.
