Rappahannock’s fresh peach crop is in full swing. In 1986, Virginia peaches ranked seventh out of 32 states producing peaches. The 1986 harvest was 667,000 bushels. Growers purposely plant peach varieties that ripen at different times during the season. This way, just when one variety is finished, another variety is getting ripe. Some varieties are naturally small in size, while others are naturally large.
Peaches were first grown in ancient China and symbolized long life and immortality. Artifacts show peaches and their beautifl blossoms were painted on porcelain vases. Caravans brought the peach to Persia where it was called “Persian Fruit.” Later as it traveled to Europe, it became known as “Persian Apple.”
The Spaniards are credited with bringing peaches to the New World to what is known as Florida. Captain John Smith and the early English colonists found peaches growing wild, probably the results of the earlier Spanish introduction. Both the
