English colonists and the French began to plant them. The Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ordered peach stones in 1629 from England. The Indians are credited with spreading the peach culture across the U.S. as they migrated westward.

The peach offers three major nutrients, vitamins A and C and iron. Peaches are sodium-free and low calorie. A medium-size peach contains only 37 calories; a half-cup serving of sliced fresh peaches contains about 40 calories.

Peaches are about 87 percent water, which makes them so refreshing as a summer fruit. They have fewer calories than either apples or pears; their protein and fat content is negligible. Yellow-fleshed peaches are especially rich in vitamin A, containing more than four times as much as an orange of the same size. Be sure to eat the peel of the peach for flavor and necessary fiber.
