The actual climb to the peak should take only a few days. But establishing a base camp and outposts further up Everest’s slope will take two to three months, the work accomplished at high altitudes where dizziness and nausea turn routine tasks into challenges. In addition, there’s the constant threat of avalanche, fatigue and frostbite. And if that isn’t enough, the caprice of weather can end the adventure well before the final push to the peak.
“A lot of climbing is luck,” Miss Reuling conceded in a recent interview. Even if the weather cooperates, the odds are against any single member of the expedition planting the flag on Everest’s summit. “Of 14 climbing, for two to go to the top would be an achievement,” she said.
