Scientists have not always agreed on the relationship between brain and behavior. It began as a philosophical debate between religion and science. One side held that the mind or soul and the body were the same thing, while the other view insisted that the two were very separate entities.
Then the scientists themselves became divided between the “localization” theorists, those who believed that special areas of the brain are responsible for specific functions - and the “mass action” proponents, those who thought that the whole mass of the brain, rather than particular neurons in specific areas, is more important to brain function. Any part of the brain, according to the latter view, can perform all of its functions.
