Mr. Luke said that his office has received two complaints from county residents about individuals posing as asphalt paving contractors.
He said that the two complaints are being investigated by his office, and at this time there is no firm evidence that there has been any illegal activity. However, he cautioned that there are ‘indications” that at least one individual, and possibly several, are attempting to defraud residents in Rappahannock and surrounding counties with fraudulent and misleading offers to pave driveways.
“I’m not saying that anyone has done anything illegal,” Mr. Luke stressed, but he added that residents considering doing business with firms offering to pave driveways should observe some precautions, including:
• Request references from the firm’s previous customers.
• Insist on a written contract, which outlines specific responsibilities of each party. The contract should include a completion date for the work.
• Make sure to get the full name of the firm and its representative, the address, and telephone number of the company.
