Milage accumulation is held to 30,000 miles annually on each patrol car, the sheriff said. The replacement schedule alternates between one and two new cars per year. In years when two vehicles are purchased, one older patrol car is passed on to the zoning office and one to the School Board. In years when a single vehicle is replaced, it goes to the zoning office, but the zoning office vehicles are in turn given to the School Board.
In exchange, the mechanics at the school bus garage do repairs on the sheriffs department’s vehicles, charging only for parts, and when the School Board eventually sells the old patrol cars, that purchase price goes back to the county’s general fund.
This arrangement has worked so successfully that Fauquier and other sheriffs departments are following Rappahannock's lead in setting up a maintenance/vehicle swap with local school boards. Sheriff Woodward noted.
