And the equation has another side. Look at the price of housing: whether rented or bought. Two-bedroom houses routinely go for between $600 and $900 a month as rentals — if they can be found. And undeveloped land is now selling for upwards of $2,000 an acre.
The fact is, living in Rappahannock County isn’t cheap any more. And, like it or not, the teachers, on whom we depend to educate the county’s next generation, are going to have to be well compensated if we are really serious about attracting the highest calibre educators to our school system.
Rappahannock County has a lot to offer in terms of quality of life — but we’re going to have to match that with dollars and cents. Quality of life doesn’t go far in paying the bills.
