In the first budget decision for fiscal year 1988-89, the supervisors on Monday authorized the purchase of patrol cars for the sheriff s department.
Sheriff John Henry Woodward reported that two 1984 Ford LTDs will have 110,000 miles by July 1. “And from the bills this past year, I can see they’re already getting expensive to maintain.” Under the county’s replacement cycle, the two cars are scheduled to be “retired" this year, the sheriff said, adding that state guidelines call for vehicles to be taken out of service at 80,000 miles.
The board’s early approval of the new vehicles is necessary to meet the deadline for orders under state contract, which puts the price at $12,074 per car.
Reimbursement comes back to the county’s general fund over tlifetiext four years through mileage payments from the State Compensation Board.
