“We’ve taken all precautions”
In the site evaluation and plans, “we’ve taken all precautions to prevent groundwater contamination,” Mr. Joyce replied. The location of monitoring wells is based on geological and hydrological evaluations to detect a pollution plume before it leaves the site should contaminants escape the liner and leachate collection system, he said. “If it moves along the fracture traces, it will be intercepted by the wells.”
Mr. Wright repeated his request for three pieces of data — the 100year flood levels, the evaluation of the shallow water system’s value, and the addition of the leachate lagoon to the first phase of landfill construction.
“There are no easy answers,” said Mr. Saylor, describing landfill engineering as risk management.
“We look to the state to see that it’s done right — even if it’s expensive, even if it’s delayed,” concluded Mr. Silverman.
