Safeway supermarkets, in conjunction with the American Lung Association, are offering radon testing kits at their $5 cost. “It’s a good preliminary screening test,” said Dr. Einarson, noting that the kits will pick up on levels of four picocuries, the level at which EPA recommends corrective action.
And that corrective action can be as simple as venilating a basement, caulking baseboards and sealing cracks.
The health department is compiling a list of local EPA-trained contractors who can assist homeowners in deciding what to do if radon has been identified as a problem.
