We, the undersigned residents of Rappahannock County, believe the planned expenditure of $13.4 million to widen 4.2 miles of Route 211 between Washington, Va and Sperryville cannot be justified by arguments for safety, convenience, or practicality The dual-lanmg ol Route 211 was planned in the 1960 s, but since then the construction of I-66 has changed relevant traffic patterns No public hearing has been held in the county on this proposal since 1974, and there has been no public hearing taking these new traffic patterns and other matters into consideration We further believe that the present highway s safety problems can be eliminated by much less expensive modifications Emptying a tour-lane highway into Sperryville would cause changes in the town that would work hardships on many residents. The existing bottleneck at the juncture of Routes 211 and 522 in Sperryville would become increasingly dangerous and inconvenient to travelers on Routes 211. 522, and 231, indicating the necessity of a bypass east and north of Sperryville that is not in current plans and which no one seems to want We urge that the plans to extend the dual lanes of Route 211 be cancelled and that work begin this year on less drastic measures to eliminate existing roadway hazards
