While data on randon measurements in Virginia homes is scant, indoor radon appears to be a significant problem in some structures, particularly in the southwestern and south central portions of the state, according to the health department.
The possibility of elevated radon levels is greatest in houses that have basements with earth floors, cracked concrete floors, drains or some other feature which may provide direct access for the gas. Energy-efficient houses designed to prevent heat loss may also retain radon gas that would otherwise escape through windows and door cracks of uninsulated buildings. Generally, radon is found in ground-floor rooms.
