After about two months of research and many, many conversations with the Highway Department and Rappahannock County residents, it seems to me that I must know nearly as much as anybody about the proposed widening ol Rt. 211 between Washington, Va., and Sperryville. Because the last public hearing on the subject was in June, 1974, and because our Board of Supervisors voted last month not to have another public hearing on the matter before the •road is built, I feel it would be helpful if I presented some of the pertinent facts that I have 'teamed.

£ • The dual-laning of Rt. 211 between War-renton and Luray was first proposed at least as 4arly as 1958. Rt. 211, which was classified an ^arterial highway,” was to be a main link, or artery, between Washington, D.C., and Interstate SI.
• Construction of the dual-lane between ■Warrenton and Washington, Va., was begun in •the late 1960s. The five segments of that project; including the Washington bypass, were completed in July 1980. * • In 1970, a public meeting was held to discuss the Highway Department’s proposal to jjviden Rt. 211 through the middle of Sperryville.
