The contest to succeed Del. Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. got more crowded last week, with two more Republicans and a second Democrat entering the fray.
On the Republican side, Front Royal businessmen Ron Gilliam and Malcolm Trevor announced their candidacies for Mr. Guest’s seat in the House of Delegates, which he has held for 18 years.
And Democrat Barbara Greco gained a rival for her party’s nomination when Front Royal’s town attorney, David N. Crump Jr., announced his intention to seek the seat.
Mr. Gilliam, the owner of a Front Royal lumber company, stumped the district last Saturday and met with a small group of Republican activitists on the steps of the courthouse. He told the group he feels he is the strongest candidate, “a common sense Republican leader who brings mature political judgment to this nomination along with in-depth business and farm experience.”
He said he plans to make high taxes, rural development, quality in education and the strengthening of traditional family values the issues in his campaign.
