“It’s a growing area of law, certainly. And it doesn't imply spouses are trying to treat each other unfairly. It just lets everybody know where things stand,” said Hobert.

There are two texts in particular that might prove helpful for people planning weddings.

Hyphenate name at will
Some married couples like to hyphenate their names. They might decide to become Mary Jones-Smith and John Jones-Smith, putting his or her name first. It’s not necessary to go through a court proceeding to do this.
But it’s only good manners to let family and friends know how to address you by sending “at-home” cards with wedding announcements.
