“Spend a few moments now to complete your tax return accurately, and you could save several days, or weeks, of waiting for your tax refund,” says Jack G. Petrie, Internal Revenue Service District Director in Richmond.

“Individuals who file early usually make fewer errors than those who file in haste late in the filing season. And errors are the primary reason for the delay of tax refunds. An error-free, early-filed tax return should result in an early refund (six to eight weeks after filing),” Mr. Petrie said.

So, spend some time now to prepare your return. Good preparation is the best way to begin. Start as soon as possible, and before you begin, check these items:

• Collect all the necessary forms (i.e., Form 1099 interest statements) and records (i.e., medical expenses, charitable contributions). Good tax records are essential to prepare a complete and accurate income tax return.

• Make sure you have enough paper, or a calculator, for your math figuring. .

• Don’t rush your work. Take your time, and consult the instructions for each line.

• Make sure you receive a Form W-2, “Wage and Tax Statement,” from each employer worked for during the past year.

Once you complete your return, take a few moments and look it over. Then go through the following check list. Remember, errors or omissions will delay processing and hold up any refund date.
