• Some photographers use assistants. Make sure you look at an assistant’s work so you know what you are getting.
Photographer shopping should be done early — at least six to 12 months beforehand. Look at friends’ and relatives' wedding albums, consult the yellow pages and visit prospective photographers in their studio.
There are organizations out there called Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and Wedding Photographers International (WPI) — these are not regulatory and membership to these organizations does not represent the competence or quality of the photographer’s work.
Qualified photographers, whether members of these organizations or not, will he happy to show their work and answer questions without obligation.
Even if you don’t know anything about photography, you probably know what is pleasing to your eye. Their portfolios should he what you base your final decision on.
