■ons' Bland Music Contest
The Rappahannock Lions Club is looking for musically talented youth to compete in its annual Bland Music Contest. The event, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26, gives young musicians an opportunity to perform, and members of the community a chance to listen to and appreciate their music. And, prizes of $100, $50 and $25 savings bonds are awarded to the top contestants in the instrumental and voice categories. First-place winners also advance to regional, state and national competitions, where additional cash awards and scholarships are presented. Interested students should contact their music teacher, Lion Mike Mahoney (675-3446) or any member of the Rappahannock Lions Club.
Karate kids
CCLC is looking for a few more karate students for an afterschool class being held on Wednesday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The cost for the 12 sessions is $65. Youth bake sale
The Youth Group of the Sperryville United Methodist Church will have a bake sale on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Sperryville Comer Store, beginning at 10 a.m. Baked goods from the church group will be greatly appreciated.
'Coming to America'
The movie Coming to America will be playing at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The movie stars superstar Eddie Murphy who displays his gentler, more romantic side as wealthy, 21-year-old African prince Akeem, who comes to Manhattan to escape an arranged marriage. With the help of his loyal adviser (popular stand-up comic Arsenio Hall), Murphy assumes a new identity and begins the search for a woman who will love him for his mind, not his money! Murphy and directqjtjohn Landis, reunited for the first time since Trading Places, pull off another hilarious comedy switch in this enchanting fable for the ’80s. The movie is rated R. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Vocational council to meet
On Monday, Feb. 6 the Vocational Education Advisory Council will meet in the Rappahannock County High School Business Education room at 7 p.m. Members of the public are invited. Several Business Education students will participate in a word processing “Simulation” program during the meeting. Other items to be covered include funding for vocational education, possible new vocational courses and a review of the proposed Vocational Education Plan. Members of the Advisory Council are Edward H. Bailey, Chairman, Will Brown, Joel Daczewitz, Aileen Johnson, Holly Pendleton, Sandra Richardson and Frances Thornton.
Covered dish dinner
The Sperryville United Methodist Church will have a covered dish fellowship supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carson Johnson on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
