They can offer valuable advice on everything from how to deal with in-laws, to handling a joint budget. Altogether too many men of the cloth complain of being “the last to know” about a domestic problem with which they could have helped out.
In some religions, Catholicism for instance, premarital counseling takes the form of mandatory classes.
In other faiths, the requirements vary.
Beyond the basic prerequisites (both persons being baptized in the same religion, for example), it is often left up to the individual religious leader and the couple what topics to discuss.
If you and your fiance do not plan to be married within a specific religion, and even if you do, marriage counselors and most mental health workers are well-qualified and available to lend an ear, or even direct a discussion between the two of you if necessary.
There are five major categories which should be touched upon in any discussion of marriage:
•MONEY. Even sex therapists believe this to be the most intimate of subjects, and the one that causes the most problems for young couples.
Money means different things to different people. Whatever the differences between you, a sound fiscal policy (and that includes the weekly household budget) is a must.
Goal-setting with your partner is something to do early on to avoid strife later due to misunderstandings.
Sit down and take a good hard look at incoming funds, and then make a list of what major purchases you’d both like to make, what kind of savings you’d like to build and any expensive luxuries you’d like to indulge in.
From the outset and periodically throughout your marriage, get in the habit of making these two lists and weighing one against the other to make necessary adjustments.
The issue of joint checking accounts and how much each person is allowed to spend per month is worth considering as well.
